Rebuilding our own brand: what we learned turning the mirror on ourselves

Rebranding our own business and launching our new website meant turning our own process on our own brand, and it turned out to be harder than we expected.

Every agency tells its clients the same thing before a rebrand - this is going to feel uncomfortable before it feels right. We've said it dozens of times, to a heritage pharmaceutical brand re-positioning itself in the market, to an automotive challenger brand going global.

What we hadn't done in a while was say it to ourselves.

Rebranding our own business and launching our new website meant turning our own process on our own brand, and it turned out to be harder than we expected. We knew exactly what needed doing, and that was almost the problem. It's a different kind of hard when the client is you.

Designing our own brief

We start every client project the same way – diagnosing the ask and formalising a brief. Diagnosis is the part clients sometimes want to rush past; they already have a hunch about what's wrong, and they want to get to the fun part. We understood that impulse for the first time from the inside. We had a hunch too, we thought we needed a sharper look. What the diagnosis actually turned up was something less about aesthetics and more about clarity. We'd grown in team size, in the breadth of what we do, in the type of client we work with, faster than our own brand and site had kept pace with.

We're not a startup that does the odd campaign anymore. We're a growing team of full-time specialists plus a global network, working across brand, marketing and digital platforms, on briefs that go from a market-entry strategy to the roadshow that launches it. Our website was still telling the story of an agency two sizes smaller.

The instinct was to treat this as a design refresh - new site, new visuals, launch in October and move on. It's the same instinct we see in clients who come to us wanting "just a new logo" when the actual problem is that nobody internally can articulate why the business is different from the three competitors circling it.

So we did the workshop. We did the stakeholder interviews. We asked our own team - the people managing Ford MS-RT's expansion into new markets, the people building PennEngineering's multi-brand platform - what they thought we were actually good at, versus what we said we were good. The gap was instructive. Everyone talked about depth - sitting inside a client's category long enough to earn the kind of trust that gets you invited into a strategy conversation, not just a delivery brief. The old site talked mostly about services.

What we changed, and why it matters to you

The result is a site built around the thing our clients actually value. Rather than telling you we deliver "bold, human-led creativity" we're showing you what that looked like when automotive OEM, EDC needed a brand new positioning to stand out from competitors, or when PEM needed to reestablish why customers should choose them above the new market entrants.

If you're evaluating an agency partner right now, that's the test worth applying to any of us: not whether the case studies look good, but whether you can trace a straight line from the brief, through the thinking, to a result you can measure.

The hardest moment wasn't the workshop or the copywriting, it was agreeing to cut things we were proud of that no longer represented where we're headed. Every agency has a version of this, the campaign you loved three years ago that doesn't fit the brand you're building now. Letting go of it in your own portfolio stings in a way that's easy to underestimate when you're advising a client to do the same thing.

We think that discomfort is a good sign. If rebuilding our own brand had felt easy, we probably weren't being honest enough about what needed to change.

This site is the start of a new and more consistent conversation. We'll be publishing regularly here, what we're learning from the work, honest breakdowns of specific client challenges, and the occasional look at where we think brand world is heading in the sectors we know best. If you're weighing up whether an agency can go the distance with you, not just for a launch, but for the decade after it, that's the conversation we'd like to have.
